We have come to expect certain standards in the UK today – such as decent food and safe products, clean air and thriving natural spaces, trustworthy transport and litter-free streets.
These things are underpinned by a set of shared rules which protect us and our loved ones every day, leaving us free to go about our day-to-day lives.
But over the years, important protections have been weakened, and the enforcement teams who make sure businesses are sticking to the rules are increasingly having to do more with less. Food hygiene checks, workplace inspections, water quality sampling, visits to check up on polluting industrial sites, action on waste crime, and product safety tests – these are just a few areas where enforcement has plummeted.
This means rogue businesses are freer to dodge the rules, leaving people and the environment exposed to harm.
