The Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE) advises ministers on the risks to human health and the environment from the release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) – this could be plants, animals or microorganisms. Its work includes researching the risks of GMOs, evaluating new scientific findings and protecting the public by issuing consents to market or release GMOs. It also advises on the release of non-native plants and animals into Britain, safeguarding landscapes, ecosystems and communities. It was established under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to advise the government in exercising powers to consent to anyone importing, acquiring, marketing or releasing GMOs. It has been classed as a central government organisation by the Office for National Statistics (see above) and the HM Treasury Classifications team.
