The Climate Change Committee (CCC) advises Westminster and devolved governments on reducing emissions and adapting to the impacts of climate change. It keeps Parliament informed on the UK’s progress in reducing its emissions and adapting to climate change, which helps the government’s environmental policy be held to account. It also advises the government on carbon budgets which help keep net zero plans on track. It helps communities in the UK by advising on risks posed by climate change and how we can adapt. It was established by the Climate Change Act 2008. This Act gives it duties to advise the Secretary of State on various matters such as carbon budgets and aviation emissions, including whether to amend the current legally binding net zero by 2050 target. The Act also sets out its duties to annually report to Parliament.
