The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) brings mission success to UK defence and security through scientific and technological innovation. It provides expert insights and advice to ensure the UK is ready in an increasingly unstable geopolitical climate. It supplies sensitive and specialist science and technology services for the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the government, and acts as a trusted interface between MOD, the government, the private sector and academia. It also coordinates the UK’s scientific activities in NATO. It was formed in 2001 from the split of the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency. In 2015 it was reorganised and its 12 operating departments were merged into five divisions. This was to make its processes more coherent and productive.
