Forestry England manages and promotes England’s publicly owned forests (including the world’s largest conifer collection, located in Kent). 99% of England’s population lives within an hour’s drive of a Forestry England forest. It is England’s largest producer of sustainable timber and works to carefully balance economic activity with protecting and growing forests and their biodiversity for everyone to enjoy. It cares for several sites of special scientific interest and national nature reserves that are in English forests and host some of the rarest wildlife. It also fosters human involvement with forests, promoting walks, artistic activities and learning about forests and nature. It was originally formed as Forest Enterprise in 1996. Its scope changed to just England after Scotland and Wales established specific forestry organisations for their forests following devolution. In 2019 Forest Enterprise England was rebranded as Forestry England. It is one of the Forestry Commission’s (see above) sub-organisations along with Forest Research (see above).
