The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) exists to protect and enhance the marine environment and support a sustainable marine economy in UK seas and coastlines for the benefit of future generations. It helps both fishing industries and local communities by delivering sustainable fishing opportunities. It also works to preserve marine wildlife. It was established in the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 (MCAA). It is tasked with ensuring the exercise of all its functions is done to advance sustainable development in a consistent and co-ordinated manner. Its various functions are either set out in the MCAA or delegated to it by the Secretary of State (which the MCAA provides for). Key activities include licensing fishing vessels, preparing marine plans for areas in England, establishing marine protection areas and managing fishing quotas.
