NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) manages donations of blood, plasma, platelets, organs, stem cells and tissue. It ensures blood and transplant donations are safe, effective and ethical. It collects and processes donations and cares for transfusion and transplant patients. It also facilitates clinical trials to produce innovative products to improve patient health. Using the invaluable contributions of donors, it saves and enhances the lives of thousands of people each year. It was formed in 2005 via a merger of the National Blood Service and UK Transplant. Its powers and duties stem from the NHS Blood and Transplant (Establishment and Constitution) Order 2005.
