The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) protects the population by preparing and responding to environmental hazards and infectious diseases like the meningitis outbreak that occurred in Kent in March 2026. It provides scientific and operational leadership to local, national and international partners in coordinating efforts to improve health outcomes. It builds the country’s health security capability and works to safeguard the public from future health threats. It is an Executive Agency sponsored by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), and forms part of the UK’s national security infrastructure. It has operational autonomy and provides expert, evidence-based advice.
