UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) supports world-leading research. It directs innovation and research funding, which furthers the UK’s scientific understanding and develops innovative, market-ready products. It also facilitates international research collaboration, as shared knowledge strengthens everyone. Furthermore, it generally promotes financial sustainability of the research sector, research integrity, and equality, diversity and inclusion in research. It was created by the Higher Education and Research Act 2017 (HER). This Act also determines what committees make up the UKRI (currently there are nine, spanning a range of academic disciplines including the humanities and social sciences as well as Science, Technology, and Medicine (STEM)). It works in partnership with universities, research organisations, businesses, charities and the government as well as running a range of institutes and facilities, such as the British Antarctic Survey.
