Trump’s victory in the US and the election of a committed deregulator as leader of the Conservative Party will have deep implications for the Protections Movement. With the libertarian agenda enjoying a boost on both sides of the Atlantic, a strong and coherent narrative on protections is needed more than ever.
Labour’s recent rhetoric suggests there is no room for complacency. Last week the chancellor used her Mansion House speech to promise a rollback on some of the ‘excessive’ financial safeguards which were put in place in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. And, just weeks after committing to an economy where people felt more in control, the Prime Minister set out his intention to tackle ‘overweening regulators’ at a summit of investors.
We know there is a huge appetite for a change of direction in the UK. Poll after poll shows that voters want strong protections that safeguard communities, protect nature and ensure businesses play by the rules.
The question is: how do we use this moment to steer Labour towards a compelling pro-protections agenda that can activate public support? Join us on December 4th, 12:30 – 14:00, for an important discussion about how we can do exactly this.
We’ll be joined by Adam McNicholas, Director at Stonehaven who until recently served as Labour’s Director of Messaging, and Marc Stears, Director of the UCL Policy Lab former Chief Speechwriter to the Labour Party. Alongside our Director, Phoebe Clay, they’ll offer key insights about how we can steer Labour away from the powerful deregulatory voices, and towards a vision that is more in line with the desires of UK voters.
